i graduated from Temple (TU) in May of '06. 1 of the last courses i took was BTMM 0364 Creating Media Business. the class was a cybercourse, so all the work & class sessions were done online. as the name suggests, the course focused on different aspects of creating a media oriented business. Bill Mooney was the instructor. he kept the class informative, interesting, & ultimately useful.
the meat of the the class was spent putting together a business plan for an imaginary business. i decided to make my business plan around my actual business intentions as a media creator.
recalling what i had learned over the years about how the industry worked & the fickle nature of market(s), i decided that the business should have 3 phases:
- project recording studio
- graphic/digital design studio
- PC/technology consulting
the logic then was that the 3 phases would help to buffer any fluctuations in the market & various other negative issues that affect small business. if 1 phase struggles to generate revenue, then the other phases serve to make up for the loss(es).
this is still the basic plan for the Refinery. it's taking a bit longer for certain things to work out than what i might have liked, but there are things in the works right now that very closely reflect the original plan.
1 of the things i tend to keep in mind is something Schoolly D once told me many years ago in reference to the industry:
"The hardest part is getting your foot in the door..."
obviously you have to get to the door before that's even a consideration. i'm still working on it...
PEACE
...be calm...
PEACE
