there may be some contention as to what a freestyle is, but i'd say there are basically 2 kinds:
- written
- off the top
i've been posting some of the writtens on FB lately & i decided to put this 1 up here...peep it:
dangerous w/pen
when i put it to pad
keep the 3rd on focus
now even when mad
loss of the view
in the face of evil
puts me in the place
of just those people
i usually find myself
standing facing 'gainst
i skip the spin
just to hit the rinse
right after wash
can't stand the soil
fluid on thought
to disperse the oil
solved w/the vent
intent on the smash
to lift w/the gift
& to get the cash
gotta fund the effort
can't record for zip
i can write for free
& even run my lip
but if i wanna move
& make this known
the drive on the grind
is requisite shown
removed on the path
finds effort's waste
& i don't wanna see
progress erased

I personally prefer the written. I always say (or have heard) the best writing comes from the best editing. Our language can be made better if we devote the time to make it so. In my practice, I hit up dictionary.com maybe 5 or 7 times a day. No different for any other practice, in my view.
ReplyDeletei would say the same. some people have difficulty referring to written lyrics as freestyles. i see all lyrics as freestyles. technically, they all come from off the top, but the live on the mic skills can separate 1 MC from another.
ReplyDeletealso, there are MC's who write & then string together their written material as if it were freestyles. usually you can tell the difference by the cadence of the flow...
